1896

During the First Italo-Abyssinian War (1895–1896), Italy was thwarted in its colonial ambitions, when the forces of Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia defeated the Regio Esercito  (Royal Army) at the Battle of Adowa (March 1, 1896).
